Best Time to See Baby Animals in Kruger National Park & Sabi Sands Safari
Welcome to the wild side of parenthood!
If you’ve ever dreamed of witnessing the miracle of life in the African bush, then pack your binoculars and sense of wonder—because the Kruger National Park and Sabi Sands Game Reserve are calling. These legendary destinations offer more than just Big 5 sightings and world-class game drives—they’re also the ultimate stage for baby animal season.
Picture tiny warthogs trotting after their moms, fluffy impala fawns learning to leap, and curious lion cubs playing hide and seek in the grass. It's the safari version of a baby shower… only with more dust and tusks!
When to Go: Timing is Everything
(Especially When You're Expecting)
The best time to visit Kruger and Sabi Sands for baby animal sightings is between November - March, during the region’s lush, green summer. This “birthing season” aligns with the rains, when food is plentiful and the bush is at its most vibrant. It’s the perfect time for moms across the savannah to give birth and for you to witness the tiniest (and often clumsiest) members of the animal kingdom taking their first wobbly steps. Talk about a once-in-a-wild-time experience!
Who’s Having Babies and When?
Animal | Birthing Season | Details |
|---|---|---|
Lion | Year-round (peak: February–April) | Cubs born throughout the year; peaks often follow rainy season when prey is plentiful. Cubs are hidden in their dens for about 6 weeks. |
Elephant | Year-round (slight peak: early wet season) | With a 22-month gestation perioed, calves are born year-round, often in early summer (November – January). |
Wildebeest | November – December | Mass calving over a few weeks; synchronized births improve calf survival rates. |
Rhinoceros | Year-round | No fixed season. Calves stay close to the mother for up to 3 years. |
Buffalo | October – March | Calving is linked to the rainy season. |
Impala | Late November to Early December | Highly synchronized birthing - females delay labor until after the first rains. |
Zebra | September – January | Foals are born in early Summer. |
Hippo | Year-round | Moms prefer to birth their young in water. The calves will stay close to the mothers and can often be seen riding their backs. |
Hyena | Year-round | Cubs are born in dens and will stay hidden for 2–3 months before emerging. |
Wild Dogs | May – July | Moms will often give birth in winter and the pups are usually first seen in their dens around July/August. |
Leopard | Year-round | Moms prfer a solitary birth giving and the cubs are hidden in rocky outcrops or dense bushes for safety. |

What a memorable stay.
Our experience was perfect from start to finish. Booking the experience through Andy set the tone for the stress-free bush experience.
From the vanilla scented towels, to the delicious food, exciting game drives and phenomenal staff, our stay at Shiduli was magical from the second we arrived and lives in our hearts long after we left.
Your helpful staff greeted us as we arrived and and were with us every step of the way... literally. We were escorted to our private villa by Gary, who my children absolutely adored. Richard, in the bar was on form and Gogo Dorris had faith that we would see lions... which we did.
Thandy and Karen were friendly, professional and made us feel like old friends. We will definitely be back and will bring our friends and family so they can share in this beautiful gem.

The Knowledge of the tracker (Donald) and our guide (Helen) was exceptional and they ensured we were able to see everything. We seen leopards, cheetahs and lions. You stop for a morning coffee out in the bush and sundowners in the evening, this was also excellently organised. The rooms are absolutely stunning with the biggest mini bar I’ve ever seen. The drink options are fantastic. Super comfortable rooms and luxurious. Food was superb. Each evening there was a different location for dinner excellently curated by the team at the hotel, with food prepared to a very high standard. We also used the gym facilities which were great. The service and operational standards at this hotel are exceptional. I would 100% stay at this lodge again it was such an incredible experience
