Camping in Kruger or Lodging in Sabi Sands: Everything You Need to Know
Eco Friendly Wildlife Conservation at its best!
When planning a safari adventure in South Africa, one of the most important decisions is choosing the right accommodation.
From basic rest camps to ultra-luxury lodges, there are options for every budget.
This guide breaks down the different types of Kruger National Park accommodation and the difference between that and the luxury lodges of the Sabi SandsPrivate Game Reserve for a world-class safari experience.
Kruger National Park Accommodation
Accommodation in and around Kruger generally falls into two categories:
Rest camps and bush camps – run by the park authorities, these are budget to mid-range, with self-catering options.
Private safari lodges – such as those in Sabi Sands, offering exclusivity, luxury, and guided safari experiences.
Type of accommodation: | Rest Camps | Bush Camps | Private Safari Lodges |
Examples: | Skukuza, Lower Sabie, and Satara | Smaller bushveld camps: Talamati, Shimuwini and Biyamiti | |
Accomodation types offered: | Bungalows, rondavels, and guesthouses | Self-catering cottages | Lodges with all meals & 2 game drives/day included |
Best Suited For: | Families and groups who want basic facilities & amenities. | Travelers seeking privacy, wildlife, and peaceful views. | Authentic Safari Seekers, Couples & Groups |
Sabi Sands Lodges
While rest camps provide a great introduction to Kruger, those looking for a truly unforgettable safari often choose the private lodges in Sabi Sands.
This world-renowned reserve shares an unfenced border with Kruger, meaning wildlife moves freely, but the experience is far more exclusive.
Why Choose Sabi Sands Over Standard Kruger Camps?
Exclusivity:
Private concessions mean fewer vehicles at sightings, ensuring a more personal safari.
Luxury:
Elegant suites, gourmet dining, and spa treatments create a five-star experience in the bush.
Guided Safaris:
Twice-daily game drives with expert rangers and trackers take you off-road for close-up wildlife encounters.
Wildlife:
Sabi Sands is famous for its high density of leopards, offering some of the best sightings in Africa.
Personalized Service:
Everything is taken care of — from meals to activities — allowing guests to relax and enjoy.
Some of the most iconic properties include Savanna, MalaMala, Ulusaba, Sabi Sabi, and Lion Sands, all available through Sabi Sands Lodges.
Choosing the Best Area to Stay in Kruger
Kruger is vast, stretching nearly 20,000 square kilometers.
Each region offers a different kind of safari experience:
Southern Kruger: Dense wildlife and popular camps, but also the busiest.
Central Kruger: Open savannahs, great for big cats, with fewer visitors than the south.
Northern Kruger: Remote and quiet, known for birdwatching and wilderness.
By contrast, Sabi Sands offers the best of all worlds — the same wildlife as Kruger, but with privacy, expert guiding, and luxury accommodation.

What a memorable stay.
Our experience was perfect from start to finish. Booking the experience through Andy set the tone for the stress-free bush experience.
From the vanilla scented towels, to the delicious food, exciting game drives and phenomenal staff, our stay at Shiduli was magical from the second we arrived and lives in our hearts long after we left.
Your helpful staff greeted us as we arrived and and were with us every step of the way... literally. We were escorted to our private villa by Gary, who my children absolutely adored. Richard, in the bar was on form and Gogo Dorris had faith that we would see lions... which we did.
Thandy and Karen were friendly, professional and made us feel like old friends. We will definitely be back and will bring our friends and family so they can share in this beautiful gem.

The Knowledge of the tracker (Donald) and our guide (Helen) was exceptional and they ensured we were able to see everything. We seen leopards, cheetahs and lions. You stop for a morning coffee out in the bush and sundowners in the evening, this was also excellently organised. The rooms are absolutely stunning with the biggest mini bar I’ve ever seen. The drink options are fantastic. Super comfortable rooms and luxurious. Food was superb. Each evening there was a different location for dinner excellently curated by the team at the hotel, with food prepared to a very high standard. We also used the gym facilities which were great. The service and operational standards at this hotel are exceptional. I would 100% stay at this lodge again it was such an incredible experience
