Kruger National Park Turns 100:

A Safari Icon Comes of Age

Kruger National Park officially came into being in 1926, when the Sabie and Shingwedzi game reserves were brought together under the National Parks Act. But its story starts earlier, with conservation ideas being raised in the 1890s and the first protected wildlife area, the Sabi Game Reserve, proclaimed in 1898. What began as a bold idea to protect wildlife has grown into one of the world’s best-known safari landscapes.

How it started

The earliest push for protection came from leaders who wanted to stop wildlife from disappearing from the Lowveld. In 1923, the first small group of visitors entered the park, and Kruger soon shifted from a protected reserve into a tourism destination. By 1927, it was open to the public, and visitor numbers began rising quickly.

How it grew

Over the decades, Kruger expanded into a huge protected area of more than 19,000 square kilometres, making it South Africa’s largest national park. It is now famous for its variety of habitats, strong wildlife populations, and classic Big Five safari experiences. What makes Kruger especially special is that it still feels wild, even as it welcomes millions of visitors each year.

Private Reserves nearby

Around Kruger, a number of private reserves developed over time, including well-known names like Sabi Sand, Timbavati, Thornybush, and Kapama. These reserves are not inside the national park itself, but they border it and offer a more exclusive safari style with luxury lodges and guided game drives. They are popular because they combine privacy, high-end comfort, and excellent wildlife viewing.

Community connections

Kruger’s story is not only about animals and landscapes; it is also about people. The park and surrounding lodges depend on nearby communities for employment, guiding, hospitality, and conservation support, while community projects help create long-term value beyond tourism. This relationship works best when tourism supports local jobs, skills development, and conservation rather than standing apart from the people who live nearby.

Ecofriendly safari life

Modern safari travel in and around Kruger is increasingly focused on lower-impact practices. That includes using reusable bottles, reducing single-use plastics, supporting lodges that save energy and water, and choosing responsible activities that protect wildlife behaviour. On safari, simple habits matter too: stay in your vehicle, keep noise low, never feed animals, and respect the rhythm of the bush

Why Kruger still matters

A century later, Kruger remains a place where safari life feels both timeless and relevant. It offers the classic African safari experience while also showing how conservation, tourism, and community can work together. For luxury safari travellers, that makes Kruger more than a destination — it is a living conservation story with great wildlife, beautiful lodges, and a deep sense of place.
