Significant Trees on African Safaris: Nature’s Luxury Landmarks

Jackalberry (Diospyros mespiliformis):
Also known as African Ebony, this large savanna giant is dioecious.
Identifying a jackalberry is easiest if you look for a tall, vertical silhouette topped with a thick, emerald-green crown.
These trees are typically found near riverbanks, on top of termite mounds, or in fertile, silty soil. Their most striking feature is a soot-coloured, dark grey trunk.

Male flowers grow in stalked clusters / bunches of three or more, while female flowers grow individually on their own stalks.
Only female trees bear the edible fruit.

Lala Palm (Hyphaene petersiana):
Common in the northern Kruger and along riverbanks, these palms have separate male and female plants.
You can identify the Lala palm (Hyphaene petersiana), or Real Fan palm, by its lofty, unbranched trunk that often features a noticeable bulge at the center. It is topped with an expansive canopy of dusty-green leaves shaped like large fans.
From a distance, male and female Lala Palms look identical. However, during the fruiting season, female trees appear "heavier" at the crown due to the massive weight of the fruit bunches hanging just below the leaves.
Only the female tree produces the iconic "vegetable ivory" nuts. If you see a palm laden with heavy clusters of shiny, dark-brown, round fruits, it is female.
